EMP (formerly the Experience Music Project and Science Fiction Museum and Hall of Fame) have announced the 2013 inductees into the Science Fiction and Fantasy Hall of Fame! Multi-award-winning author Joanna Russ will join noted practicing alien David Bowie along with artist H.R. Giger, writer and editor Judith Merril, and renowned fantasist J.R.R. Tolkien.
Joanna Russ’ fiction and non-fiction use science fiction and fantasy to explore feminism, gender and patriarchy, H.R. Giger is the artist behind the Alien films, among many other works, Judith Meril wote seminal short stories including “That Only a Mother” and “Dead Center” before becoming an influential editor in science fiction’s New Wave movement, J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings are foundational works in fantasy literature, and David Bowie—well, everyone knows who David Bowie is.
Experience Music Project is a non-profit museum that focuses on risk-taking and innovation in the arts and popular culture. The Science Fiction Museum and Hall of Fame, originally part of the Gunn Center for the Study of Science Fiction at the University of Kansas, found a permanent home at EMP in 2004, where a panel of luminaries in the world of science fiction and fantasy review nomination by EMP members.
